Second game of the night for Week 2 was against Ron playing a Makeda3 tier list. His list was:
Faction: Makeda3 – Armageddon
Makeda and the Exalted Court (*2pts)
* Bronzeback Titan (10pts)
* Mammoth (19pts)
* Titan Gladiator (8pts)
* Aptimus Marketh (3pts)
Paingiver Beast Handlers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (2pts)
Praetorian Swordsmen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Praetorian Swordsmen Officer & Standard (2pts)
Ancestral Guardian (3pts)
I’ve played against Skorne a few times but I’ve always lost when the Mammoth was on the other side. Generally what happens is I let my caster get killed by boosted AOEs, so I was going to try to avoid that this game. He won the roll (thanks in part to his tier bonus) and chose to go second. Deployment looked like:
For me it was Banes center, Raiders top right, Leviathan and arc node bottom left, and Skarre in the middle. For him it was Bronzeback upper left, Gladiator upper right, Mammoth dead center, and swordsmen also in the center. He was proxying quite a few models so it may be hard to see in the pictures.
I ran everything up!
He also ran stuff up!
I put 2 focus on the Leviathan. Through the arc node I put black spot on the swordsmen and cast perdition to move Leviathan up. Both hit (yay). The Leviathan moved up and thinned out the Swordsmen. The pistol wraith on the left got a death chill on his Bronzeback, and the Raiders on the right killed a few more Swordsmen. I think he was down to 1 or 2 swordsmen at this point.
He moved Makeda up and popped her feat, winding up with like 9 or 10 fury at the end of the turn. The Mammoth killed raiders and a few Banes. The Gladiator killed some Raiders. The Bronezeback had to sac his action because of Death Chill, but the Ancestral Guardian killed the offending pistol wraith. Unfortunately it was getting late and we started to forget to take pictures.
This is the round I went for a terrible assassination attempt! Deathjack got loaded up with focus and charged a Makeda sitting on 9 fury. She had to transfer off some big hits, but there was no reason for me to try this. In retrospect I should have gone for other targets. Other than that I really wasn’t able to do much. Banes and Raiders cleared out a couple more models. I feated targeting Deathjack, Skarre, Makeda, the Bronzeback, and the Leviathan. After my turn:
We again forgot to take pictures after his round. His Bronzeback shuffled forward, his Mammoth frenzied and killed a Bane Thrall, his Gladiator killed a bunch of Raiders, and Makeda moved around towards the back of the zone.
I loaded Deathjack up with focus and dropped the Mammoth with one focus to spare. Skarre moved and cast admonition on herself to avoid a charge from the Bronzeback. The Leviathan moved over to the Bronzeback and tried to put some damage into it (but failed to do much). In retrospect the Leviathan should have done something else, but most everything was in melee this point and shooting wasn’t an option. The pistol wraith tried to death chill his gladiator’s but whiffed on the first shot.
At this point the shop was closing up, and Ron was about to concede. He decided instead that he’d try to take down the Deathjack and would give up if it didn’t work. His Bronzeback scrapped both my Nightwretch and my Leviathan, and he charged the Deathjack with Makeda after casting Vortex of Destruction. Because of Deathward the Deathjack didn’t go down and still had all of its systems fully operational. After everything that could charged Deathjack and came up short he conceded. Here’s a shot at the end.
If I hadn’t gone for the awful assassination attempt I think the game would have ended with me feeling better about the win. It helped a lot that his Mammoth frenzied, and I’m not sure if I would have won if that didn’t happen. I’m not sure why I thought charging a Def. 15 Makeda with 9 fury was a good idea. I think I could have killed the Mammoth that turn and then been in a better position after my feat. I had a great first couple rounds, but didn’t play the end very cleanly.
The feat worked very well in this game though because Ron was so reliant on his beasts to do work. Between death chill and feat his Bronzeback spent 2 turns doing nothing. Deathjack also had a much better game, and I wasn’t forced to charge a low-value target because of terrain.
I’m enjoying eSkarre quite a bit. She likes to hand out focus let her jacks do a lot of the work, but she also wants to cast some of her spells (like Black Spot and Perdition), so you really have to think about how to spend your focus. Being able to cut to upkeep is great, and the Necrosurgeon is worth its points in gold, but also effectively limits Skarre’s movement speed to 6.
So! 1-2 after 2 weeks of the league. I’m enjoying myself and the caster, and I think I’m improving. On to next week!
